|Advocate Reporter NEWARK -- A nationally known acting coach and director will address a crowd of local hopeful performers this weekend. Peter Sklar -- who has coached, directed or discovered Sarah Jessica Parker, Reese Witherspoon and Rick Schroder -- will lecture about professional success Saturday at Reinita's Baton and Dance Studio in Newark. Self-esteem is vital to the casting process, Sklar said. "The most important thing you can do in the audition is reveal yourself," he added. Sklar said people who are genuine will be most successful, and those he's worked with carried that attribute. "It was one of those things that attracted me to them long before they were famous," Sklar said. He has also worked with Mischa Barton of "The O.C.," Zachery Ty Bryan of "Home Improvement" and talk show host Ricki Lake. Saturday's lecture is free, but participants must register. The New York resident travels around the United States and Europe, often discovering new talent. He mostly speaks with high school and college students. Sklar's book, "Winning Monologues from the Beginnings Workshop," is a standard text in many high school and college theater departments. He studied concert piano at New York's Julliard School of Music and holds a master's degree in education from Harvard University.
